Bullying and Harassment Prevention

 

In the Department of Economics, we are committed to establishing an inclusive and supportive culture in which all staff and students feel welcomed, accepted and given a voice, irrespective of individual and group differences.  

The Department does not tolerate any form of harassment or victimisation and expects all members of our community and its visitors to treat each other with respect, courtesy and consideration, adhering to the University of Oxford’s policy on Bullying and Harassment.  

Our Department code of conduct sets out the standard of behaviour and good practice expected from our community.

Who to speak to

If you're experiencing bullying or harassment, or have witnessed an incident where you think they have taken place, please speak to someone early so we can resolve the problem. 

One option available to you is to speak to Tom Mills who is the Department Welfare Contact. Tom is the point of contact in the department for any student welfare concerns and he will be able to signpost students to the most appropriate support. Alternatively, students can seek support from the University’s Student Welfare and Support Services (https://www.ox.ac.uk/students/welfare), the Sexual Harassment and Violence Support Service (https://www.ox.ac.uk/students/welfare/supportservice/about), from your college welfare team or the Student Union who can offer support on advice and wellbeing (https://www.oxfordsu.org/advice-wellbeing/). You can also speak to your supervisor or course directors or contact a Harassment Advisor. You can make a formal complaint to the Proctors’ Office or through your college, depending on the context where the bullying and harassment is taking place.

Another option available to you is to speak confidentially to one of the Department’s Harassment Advisors:  

A new online platform is now available for University employed staff, providing support, guidance and services relating to bullying and harassment.

As an extension to the Harassment Advisory Service, the platform provides an additional route for accessing information and support relating to bullying and harassment. You can also use the tool to tell the University about an incident or concern of bullying or harassment that you’ve experienced or witnessed, either anonymously, or with you name and contact details. Sharing information about an incident through Report + Support won’t initiate a formal complaint.

Report + Support is being piloted for University-employed staff in the first, and data gathered in the tool will also help the University help shape future prevention work. You can access the tool here: https://reportandsupport.ox.ac.uk/.
